Knight Commander’s Breast Star, 73 mm, belonged to a Russian dignitary: chiseled and pierced four-armed cross, superimposed with the order’s Cross with “frosted” finish; gilt and enameled centre surmounted by the royal crown of Tudor type in gold and enamels, the reverse, with two gold screws fixing the obverse assembly; the original pin, changed on behalf of the original owner, with a screwback suspension of Russian type, its main silver disc, struck with a silver and a “ДО” mark, the smaller nut, with two spheres. Having been the rear medallion drilled to place the screw, of the originally three-digits engraved award number, only the first and the last “1” and “6” are well visible, the middle digit could be a “7” or, less probably, a “3”. As a matter of interest, a list of the Russian recipients of this class during the reign of Queen Victoria andKing Edward VII is here given: Lt. General Baron Vladimir Frederiks, Maj. General Count Paul Benckendorf, Col. Daschkov, Maj. General Nikolay Yermolov,Vice Admiral Konstantin Nilov, Prince Konstantine Gorshakov, Maj. Gen. Vladimir Dedulin, Maj. Gen. Aleksandr Mossolov, Rear Admiral Nikolay Essen, Rear Admiral Aleksandr count Heiden, Aleksandr Savinsky, Master of Ceremonial, Ministry of foreign Affairs, Prince Vladimir Orlov, Aid de Camp to the Tsar, ColonelIsmael de Korostovets, Governor of Estonia, Stanislaw Pokiewsky-Koziell, Embassy Counsellor, Rear Admiral Ivan Khagin.A very fine piece, particularly rare for the variation; in very fine condition.
