IV Class Badge. Breast Badge, 45x28 mm., GOLD, made as the elaborately designed monogram of both Queen Victoria and Albert, the Prince Consort, its obverse profusely set with pearls and diamonds, the reverse, with finely engraved details, hinged, suspension in the form of the British crown also made of gold, completely set with diamonds, the “inner cap”, enriched with red enamel, round loop and ribbon ring, mounted to its original, ivory silk, ladies’ bow ribbon.
An extremely rare badge from the 3rd quarter of 19th Century, excellent condition.
note: The Royal Order of Victoria and Albert was established by Queen Victoria on February 10, 1862.
The Order was divided in four classes according to the rank of the recipient and personally conferred by Queen Victoria upon female members of the royal family and the closest, royal entourage. The “Sovereign’s Badge” was worn by Queen Victoria herself. The Order ceased to be awarded upon the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. The IV Class award was presented to the “Ladies of Bedchamber”.
