Grand Cross Set, Civil Division. Sash Badge, 88x55 mm., GOLD, 38 g., as a red enameled cross of Maltese type with ball-finials, blue enameled centre medallion with beautifully embossed image of the saint in gold, within golden outer circlet bearing the raised and polished inscription “S. GREGORIUS MAGNUS” and a laurel wreath below, the reverse similar to the obverse, but blue enameled centre medallion bearing the motto “PRO DEO / ET / PRINCIPE” within golden outer circlet bearing the raised inscription “GREGORIUS XVI . P. M. ANNO. I”, rectangular upper loop and beautifully-made oak wreath enriched with translucent green enamel on an excellently-done chisel-work, suspension loop as a chiseled, stylized rosette, two link-rings and suspended to the original, full-length sash ribbon. Breast Star, 87 mm., Gold and Silver, 79 g., with chiseled and pierced rays, the centre in Gold and enamels, similarly to the badge’s obverse, but the centre medallion within diamond-cut beaded silver border, the reverse fitted with pin and bearing the maker’s cartouche of Messrs. Halley, Paris, the whole in the original, red morocco case of issue with gold embossed ornaments. A superbe set in the finest French manufacture from the 3rd quarter of 19th Century, excellent condition. I
